Transtint dyes are dissolved in a universal solvent (ethylene glycol I think) which makes them convenient to add to a variety of mediums. I don't know how effectively Rit dyes will go into lacquer, shellac or alcohol but if making toners is your thing, this could be an important consideration.The left dye is Transtint metalized dye. The right dye is Lockwood analine dye. Both are water-soluble. I covered the top half of the panel and put it in a west-facing window for six months. You can see that both dyes faded (on the lower areas) but the analine dye faded more than the metalized dye.

Reddish brown is unnatural, pink-ish and just all around bad. I tried it standard strength, I tried it half strength, I tried it 1 part reddish brown to three parts golden brown. None were good. Raise the grain first by wiping the wood with a damp cloth, sanding the fuzz, and applying the dye or simply spraying the dye on, leave the fuzz, and smooth the surface after applying your sealer.
