Wooden planks or vines block some passages, but these can be destroyed with a weapon or tool. After 7 or 8 mines I have 16 cores and 17 fragments. Probably just unlucky, but definitely make sure you’re fully exploring the mines and not missing any hidden treasure rooms. Those usually have 1-3 cores in them.
