Just for clarafication, SJBUSHI, this is the procedure for bikes with the oil pan. On other models, like the softails with the oil tank under the seat, the bike should be straight up. Even with the softails now (changed in 05), your can check it on the kickstand (dipstick was changed).

In desert conditions people are reporting oil temps in the 350F range. HD says cylinder head temps in the 400f range are sustainable. I read one recent report where a guy measured his oil pan at 285F and rear cylinder at 385F. The older carbureted big twins would see average oil temps in the 210-240F range.

Lift the chain with your finger at several locations. I think the spec is 3/8 - 5/8 inch play cold so a little less than a fingers width would be in the ball park. Make the adjustment at the tightest spot in the chain.

Some prefer Dino oil because it is cheaper and gives adequate protection for the motor. Some use the same product for all three holes.It still has the the stock spring cam chain adjusters. I pulled the exhaust & inspection cover to visually check the adjusters at 40,000 & again at 50,000 miles, (+/-) [see attached photo links] and they appeared OK to me. Very little wear. In fact, there appeared to be almost no change between the 40,000 mile, & 50,000 mile inspection.Empty the engine oil tank and fill it with fresh oil. The engine oil capacity is about 3 quarts (2800 ml). Drain the transmission and refill it with fresh fluid. The transmission holds 24 ounces (710 ml). Drain the primary chain case and fill it with oil until it reaches the bottom of the clutch hub.
