The effect of altitude on carb performance is vastly exaggerated. My drz has an FCR39 (no choke). I live at 2000 ft and my trail rides take me routinely beyond 7500ft. It's a *bit richer, but there isn't a dramatic loss of power or anything. Folks who actually ride at varying altitudes make sure their carbs are tuned and just go ride.

You can test the float needle valve with the carb off the bike and the bowl removed by lightly holding the rubber tipped needle valve in the seat to see if it seals. If it doesn't, figure out why. If it seals, I'd check and recheck your float height then. The float is letting too much fuel in before closing the valve.That said, SmartCarbs work as well if not better (sweet, sweet vacuum, i.e. signal) in 4T applications as they do in the 2T world, provided they are properly sized, installed, and tuned with the correct fuel profile (metering rod).
