P.S. Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington may be of interest to you. Whitman is smaller than Kenyon College with just about 1,450 students but is more liberal and has strong programs in biology, economics, and environmental science. Lots of outdoor activities including white-water rafting, hiking, biking, etc.

I have a senior at Kenyon who went there from a very strong, selective-admission high school for academically gifted students (a small school that has produced a few Nobel prize winners), and she finds Kenyon very rigorous.Bates campus is a bit compact while Kenyons is more expansive. After spending a weekend at Kenyon my son felt more comfortable with his decision to choose Bates. They are both excellent schools so you can't go wrong really.
